Overview
Chronic kidney disease patients with HBV and HCV are managed as a team by both Hepatologist and Nephrologist. Kataria hospital has started maintenance hemodialysis facility for outdoor patients. In addition, Kataria hospital has the dedicated and experienced dialysis technician and nursing staff that are focused to meet the psychological, physical and emotional needs of the patients.
We are planning to start renal transplant program at ILBS in near future.
Services and treatment offered include
- Hemodialysis
Hemodialysis is a process that uses a dialysis machine to filter blood outside the body. During hemodialysis, the patient’s blood is pumped through a dialyzer (artificial kidney), where it is cleansed of waste products and excess fluids before being returned to the body. Hemodialysis treatments are typically performed several times a week and last for several hours each session. Dialysis centers provide hemodialysis services, where patients receive treatment under the supervision of trained healthcare professionals.
Slow Low Efficiency Dialysis (SLED)
SLED is a valuable treatment option for patients requiring renal replacement therapy, offering a balance between the continuous nature of CRRT and the efficiency of conventional hemodialysis. It is particularly beneficial for hemodynamically unstable patients or those with acute kidney injury who may not tolerate more aggressive forms of dialysis. However, the choice of dialysis modality should be individualized based on patient characteristics, clinical status, and treatment goals, with input from a multidisciplinary team of healthcare providers.
Liver Dialysis (Prometheus)
The Prometheus system is typically used in the intensive care unit (ICU) or specialized liver units under the supervision of hepatologists, critical care physicians, and trained healthcare professionals. It is considered a supportive therapy rather than a definitive treatment for liver failure and is often used in conjunction with other medical interventions, such as pharmacological therapies, nutritional support, and management of complications.
The goals of liver dialysis with the Prometheus system include:
- Removing toxins and metabolic byproducts that accumulate in the bloodstream due to impaired liver function.
- Improving hepatic encephalopathy (confusion or altered mental status) by reducing ammonia levels.
- Alleviating symptoms of liver failure, such as jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes) and coagulopathy (abnormal bleeding or clotting).
- Providing temporary liver support while awaiting liver transplantation or allowing time for liver recovery in cases of acute liver injury or acute-on-chronic liver failure.
While liver dialysis with the Prometheus system shows promise in supporting patients with acute liver failure, further research is needed to determine its long-term efficacy, optimal timing, and impact on clinical outcomes. It is considered an advanced and specialized therapy that may be offered in select medical centers with expertise in liver transplantation and liver critical care.
Plasmapheresis
Plasmapheresis is typically performed in a hospital or specialized treatment center by trained healthcare professionals, including nephrologists, hematologists, neurologists, or critical care physicians. The frequency and duration of plasmapheresis treatments vary depending on the patient’s underlying condition, severity of symptoms, response to therapy, and treatment goals. It is often used as a short-term intervention to achieve rapid removal of targeted substances from the bloodstream, followed by ongoing medical management as needed.
Peritoneal Dialysis including CAPD
Peritoneal Dialysis: Peritoneal dialysis is a type of dialysis that involves using the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum) as a natural filter to remove waste products and excess fluids from the blood. Peritoneal dialysis is performed at home by the patient or caregiver, following training provided by healthcare professionals. Dialysis services for peritoneal dialysis may include education, training, ongoing support, and monitoring to ensure that patients can perform dialysis safely and effectively at home.
Kidney Biopsy
A kidney biopsy is a medical procedure used to obtain a small sample of kidney tissue for diagnostic evaluation. It is typically performed to help diagnose and assess the severity of kidney diseases and disorders, including chronic kidney disease (CKD), glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and other kidney conditions.
Overall, kidney biopsies are valuable diagnostic tools that help healthcare providers accurately diagnose kidney diseases, assess disease severity, and develop individualized treatment plans to optimize patient care and outcomes.
Jugular/subclavian/femoral catheter insertion for vascular access
Insertion of catheters into the jugular, subclavian, or femoral veins is a common procedure used to establish vascular access for various medical purposes, including hemodialysis, administration of medications, fluid resuscitation, and monitoring of hemodynamic parameters. Each approach has its advantages and considerations, and the choice of insertion site depends on factors such as the patient’s medical condition, venous anatomy, and the intended use of the catheter.
