Overview
A laparoscopic appendectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to remove the appendix. The appendix is a small, finger-shaped pouch attached to the large intestine in the lower right side of the abdomen. When the appendix becomes inflamed or infected, a condition known as appendicitis, it can cause severe abdominal pain and requires surgical removal to prevent complications such as rupture and infection.
The main stay of treatment of Acute Appendicitis is removal of the inflamed appendix: either by laparoscopy or by open technique.
Laparoscopic appendectomy offers several advantages over traditional open surgery, including smaller incisions, less pain, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery times. However, not all cases of appendicitis are suitable for laparoscopic surgery, and the decision to perform a laparoscopic or open appendectomy depends on factors such as the severity of the inflammation and the patient’s overall health.
Laparoscopic Appendectomy is done under general anaesthesia.
